Well here I am almost a month later after I told you I was doing a major overhaul of my blog and if memory serves me correctly I said I would be done in a couple of days. So much for meeting my deadline. I just ran into many unexpected problems along the way and the final straw was when I couldn’t get online for three days. Three days may not seem like much but in Internet time it’s like an eternity. And if I’m going to be perfectly honest with you I must admit that I just got lazy for awhile and took some time off to boot.

But I’m back now and all fired up full of piss and vinegar ready to start giving you some great quality content here.

Even though the bulk of my blog overhaul is complete I expect it will be forever changing. So if you come here and things don’t look quite right come back in a bit and things may have changed, for the better I hope. I like the way it is pretty much but I still have plenty of tweaking to get it where I want it to be.

I have created this blog for you to enjoy so I want to make it work for you. If there’s something about the new design you like then tell me. On the other hand, if there’s something about the new design you don’t like then keep it to yourself. Just Kidding.

I want to know one way or another how you feel about the new look.

So Please, give it a mulling over and let me know what you think.

Why Do Weddings Have To Cost So Much?

I just came from my friend Gary Simpson’s blog and he had pictures of his daughter’s wedding on it and it got me to thinking about my wedding long ago and how times have sure changed. This started out as a comment on his blog but the more I typed I said I should post this on my blog. So here we are.

Weddings are out of control these days. I don’t know how people can afford it.

You want to hear one of those “when I was a kid” stories. NO! Too Bad, I’m going to tell you anyway.

My wedding cost $50. Yep, that’s not a misprint. We had our dream wedding all planned way before we got married. We lived together for three and a half years before we got married so we had plenty of time to think about what we wanted our wedding to be like.

We said we wanted to buy a house first and get married in it right in front of the fireplace. Well, that’s exactly what we did 31 years ago. I asked the Minister from my church to come to my house and marry us and that’s where the $50 bucks went, to pay the Minister.

We just had family and a few close friends over then they all took us out to a local restaurant. That’s it.

Our honeymoon was a laugher.

We went about 70 miles to the ocean for two days and the one night we spent there we slept in the back of my pickup truck. At least I had a cap on the truck bed so we were protected from the elements. We didn’t mind because at the time we were avid campers as we both love the outdoors. I did have a mattress in the back of the truck and that’s what we used to sleep on when we went camping. It was quite comfy as a matter of fact. It was better than sleeping on the cold damp ground in sleeping bags.

I know, it sounds like one of Jeff Foxworthy’s redneck jokes. But I couldn’t get any time off from work(not even to get married)so we did this on the weekend.

That’s it. That was the extent of our wedding. Nothing fancy or expensive. Just lots of Love. That’s all we needed. Both my wife and I were raised to appreciate the little things in life and that you didn’t have to spend a ton of money to enjoy yourself.

That’s where things have changed in this world. Now a days these young kids seem to think their parents have thousands of dollars to spend on their weddings. I just pulled these numbers off the Internet so it’s not like I’m making this up. The average wedding in 2007 cost $27,490. In 2008 the price plummeted to $21,814 and it’s anticipated it will drop another 10 percent in 2009 during these tough economic times. Still, $21,814 for a wedding. Are you kidding me.

I think this is ludicrous. This doesn’t even include the cost for the honeymoon or engagement ring. I didn’t check on the cost of these two items but I’m guessing it’s between eight and ten thousand dollars. Add this to the wedding costs and you have a whopping $30,000.

That’s more than I paid for my first house. And that brings me to the point I’m trying to make. Especially with today’s economy don’t you think the brides could be less selfish and give up a few things to bring the cost down a little. Yes I said the brides, because let’s be honest here. Guys really don’t care. They just want to get married and really don’t care where.

If you want my opinion, and I don’t care if you do because I’m going to give it to you anyway, young couples could have a nice little back yard wedding or something similar for $5,000. That leaves $25,000 that could be used as a down payment on a new house. This is something that could last them the rest of their lives instead of having nothing to show for it accept an album full of wedding pictures.

I know so many people that have their kids live with them because they can’t even afford an apartment. I think that’s terrible. Where are our kids priorities and why should the parents be stuck paying the bill. There are more grandparents raising there grandchildren and they all say they love it and maybe they do but I still don’t agree with it.

Parents should be bringing up there own kids and not dumping them off on the grandparents. I don’t have any grandchildren but if I did I would love to have them visit but at least I could send them home when I wanted. I already raised a son and I don’t want to raise anymore.

I think I got off my point somewhere along the line here. As you can see this is a touchy subject for me.

Times have changed and people better start waking up. Parents can’t afford to pay for college AND a huge wedding for their kids. I know we all want the best for our kids but if you don’t have the money to afford these extravagant weddings then the kids need to show some restraint and scale down a little.

No, a lot.

OK, I’m done venting. I need to stop now as I could go one forever on this topic.

Let me know what your thoughts are on this subject.

I’m Doing A Major Overhaul Of My Blog

Hopefully this will be my last post using this theme. Not that I don’t like this theme it’s just that I’ve grown tired of it and I think it’s time for a change. This theme was actually a little hard to maintain. Some things just didn’t work right and I had to do too much coding to correct them. Hopefully I can spend less time coding and more time posting as this new theme is much easier to maintain. I’ve been pondering changing it for some time now but there just never seems to be enough time in the day.

I have been working on this new theme on my test blog and I really like it. I do all my testing there before I roll out anything new to make sure it works OK. I can thank my good friend Garry Parkes for turning me on to this theme. Although he didn’t exactly tell me about it I did read the link in the footer of his blog telling me who designed it. So I paid the site a visit and really liked what I saw. Sorry Garry, I’m not stealing from you and I will try not to make it look too much like yours.

I hope to have it changed around in the next couple days but it will still be a work in progress so if something doesn’t work right or doesn’t look right just give it a few days and come back and visit and hopefully I’ve fixed it.

So please feel free to leave comments on what you think of my new blog.

Are you spending all your time watching videos instead of implementing the things that you learned how to do in the last video? If you fall into this category don’t feel bad, you are not alone. Video has taken the Internet by storm in the last couple years and there’s no sign of it letting up anytime soon. In fact, I’m sure it’s going to get much bigger in the years to come.

But beware, watching videos can be addicting. There are so many out there on sites like Youtube, Viddler, and Revver. You’ll also find them on blogs, links to them in your emails from marketers trying to sell you their products, and in membership sites.

If you are just starting a new online business, or even a seasoned veteran, there is so much to learn from these videos. But if you spend all day watching them and not implementing what you have learned it is all for not.

There also seems to be a new trend happening that I don’t care much for. I’m starting to see a lot more videos out there that don’t have any controls on them so you can’t stop, pause, or fast forward them. So if someone has created a 50 minute long video you’re either stuck watching the whole thing or as I usually do I just shut it down and go do something else.

My time is too precious to sit and watch a video that long unless it’s loaded with great content throughout the entire video, and let’s face it, there just aren’t that many of those out there.

Yes, I watch videos too, but I do it in a lot less time than most. Take that 50 minute video I was talking about earlier. I can watch it in just under 36 minutes. How do I do that you ask?

I ran across this simple little tool the other day and I thought I’d share it with you. It’s called Enounce MySpeed. What this tool does is increase, or decrease, the speed of most videos you watch while maintaining the integrity of the audio so that you can still understand what the person is saying. No Alvin and the Chipmunks effects.

I watch all my videos at 1.4 times the actual speed. This is the highest speed setting for the free version. I see no need but if you want to go a lot faster then you will have to purchase the Pro or Premier versions. No, I’m not trying to sell you anything here and there’s no affiliate link on this post.

So go on and keep watching those videos, just try and be a little more selective and watch ones that are going to help you with your business. If you watch just 10 hours of videos and use the free version of Enounce MySpeed at its highest setting you will free up about 3 hours that you can now use towards growing your business.

Happy New Year – Let’s Shine In 2009

Happy New Year to everyone.

I wonder how many people are still in bed this morning nursing a hangover. I hope it was worth it. I feel just fine this morning. The strongest thing I had to drink last night was a glass of Sprite.

I’m sitting at my kitchen table sipping on a nice hot cup of coffee trying not to think about what it’s like outside. But incase anyone else is wondering, it’s 5 degrees below 0 and during the night wind gusts up to 40mph. I don’t know what that translates to as far as wind chill but I’ve been living here long enough to know that’s freakin cold. On top of that, we got another foot of snow yesterday.

On the bright side, the wind has calmed down, the sun is shining and it has stopped snowing finally. If it sounds like I’m whining about the weather here you’re right on, that’s because I can’t stand winter.

If you’ve been reading my blog at all you will see in other posts that the last few weeks here have been hell as far as the weather goes.

I just have to keep telling myself that in 4 months I’ll be standing in a river catching trout when ever I feel like it. That’s what gets me through these New England winters.

I’m going to be giving an audio interview with my fellow Marketing With Alex students Mark Call, Garry Parkes and Mark Austin. The interview will be posted sometime in January on I will let you know as I find out a few more details.

When I was asked if I wanted to do this at first I said you’ve got to be kidding me, what have I got to offer. There must be some more interesting people than me they could be interviewing. But then I thought why not me, I have as much to offer as anyone else.

All right calm down. After my head had swelled to the size of a basketball thinking I was some great Guru or something it just as quickly deflated back to normal when I found out they were trying to interview as many of Alex Jeffreys students as they could.

Actually I agreed to do this and to be honest I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’m excited to be given the opportunity but then again scared sh**less because this is way out of my comfort zone.

And as long as we’re being honest, I thought hey, we’re supposed to be trying to get traffic to our blogs and what better way to do it than to give an interview. :-)

While this may be true, the real reason is to do my part in giving a helping hand to some of the students or anyone else for that matter that could use it. The way I see it, this is an I’ll scratch your back now and maybe you’ll scratch mine later type of business.

I’ll always be more than willing to help someone if I can. It’s just a great feeling when someone asks for your help with a problem they can’t seem to solve and you come to their rescue and fix their problem for them. There’s no better feeling in the world.

Plus I know at some point I will need their help and I know they will be there for me.
